BackgroundSelenium has a major role in male reproduction and antioxidative mechanisms. Although deficiency of this element can result in damages to the body's organs, this metalloid can induce deleterious effects in organisms by causing oxidative stress. This study assessed the spermatotoxicity of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) in goldfish (Carassius auratus) based on genotoxicity, antioxidant status, sperm quality, and histopathology.MethodsThe fish with an average weight of 70 g (n = 288) were divided into four experimental groups (three replicates) and fed three times a day with SeNPs at different levels of 0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1 mg kg diet for 30 and 60 days.ResultsAfter 30 and 60 days of feeding trial, compared to the control group, spermatocrit percentage markedly decreased at 1 mg kg SeNPs on day 30 as well as at 0.5 and 1 mg kg on day 60 (p < 0.05). Computer-assisted sperm analysis parameters especially VCL, VSL, and VAP decreased in response to SeNPs (p < 0.05). Percentage of fast speed progressive sperm cells was highest in fish fed with 0.1 mg kg SeNPs following the dietary experiment and significantly reduced in a SeNPs dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). In addition, the levels of Malondialdehyde and Glutathione peroxidase were significantly elevated in seminal plasma of all SeNPs-treated groups (p < 0.05). On day 60, DNA damage of sperm was greatly increased at 1 mg kg SeNPs (p < 0.05). Moreover, the highest percentage of spermatocyte and spermatid were observed at the highest dose of SeNPs while the highest percentage of spermatozoa was recorded at the lowest and moderate SeNPs doses.ConclusionThese findings suggested that non-optimal doses of SeNPs could reduce sperm quality, induce oxidative stress, and DNA damage in sperm, and disrupt testis development.  相似文献

BackgorundCowpea is a crop widely used in developing countries due its rusticity. Besides its rich genotypic variability, most breeding programs do not explore its potential to improve elements uptake. Selenium (Se) is a scarce element in most soils, resulting in its deficiency being common in human diets. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between biofortification with Se and genotypic variation in cowpea, on the concentrations of Se in roots, leaves + stem and grains.MethodsTwenty-nine cowpea genotypes were grown in a greenhouse in the absence (control) and presence of Se (12.5 μg Se kg−1 soil) as sodium selenate, in fully randomized scheme. The plants were cultivated until grains harvest. The following variables were determined: roots dry weight (g), leaves + stems dry weight (g), grains dry weight (g), Se concentration (mg kg−1) in roots, leaves + stems and grains, and Se partitioning to shoots and grains.ResultsSelenium application increased the Se concentration in roots, leaves + stems and grains in all genotypes. At least twofold variation in grain Se concentration was observed among genotypes. Selenium application did not impair biomass accumulation, including grain dry weight. Genotype “BRS Guariba” had the largest Se concentration in grains and leaves + stems. Genotype MNC04-795 F-158 had the largest partitioning of Se to shoots and grain, due to elevated dry weights of leaves + stems and grain, and high Se concentrations in these tissues.ConclusionThis information might be valuable in future breeding programs to select for genotypes with better abilities to accumulate Se in grain to reduce widespread human Se undernutrition.  相似文献

This article explores the process of using lessons learned about high quality, effective arts education programs to help local educational leaders and practitioners create their own policy statements. It raises questions about policy implications from those lessons and connects them to the readers'own experience. It provides an intellectual framework and an action agenda for developing local policy at the classroom, school, or district level that supports high quality arts education for every student. It argues that effective arts education programs must be supported by responsive policy and ongoing tax levy funds to have a greater chance for providing quality arts teaching and learning that endures.  相似文献

The pseudo-capacitive behaviour of a high surface area carbon veil electrode in a tubular microbial fuel cell (MFC) was investigated as a mechanism to enhance power quality and energy efficiency. Accumulated charge and energy from the anodic biofilm after prolonged open circuit times (1–120 min) were compared against equivalent periods of steady state loading (R = 100–3000 Ω). A significant difference in the amount of accumulated charge with different loads was observed, resulting in 1.051 C (R = 100 Ω) compared to 0.006 C (R = 3 kΩ). The automated application of short open and closed circuit (0.5–10 s) cycles resulted in an increase of power/current production (closed circuit alone), but presented lower efficiency considering entire open and closed period. The cumulative charge on the carbon veil electrode with biofilm was 39,807 C m−2 at 100 Ω. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) showed that the Helmholtz layer presented a double layer capacitance of more than ten times the biofilm on electrode. The results indicate that the capacitive behaviour could be utilized to increase the power quality, i.e. its availability/applicability with respect to the operation of low power consuming devices.  相似文献

Measurements were made of the differences between sunflower and climbing hempweed leaves for development, fecundity and egg hatchability of Diacrisia casignetum Kollar. Developmental time and weight gains of sunflower-fed larvae were respectively longer and greater than those of hempweed-fed ones. The development time and weight gain, attributable to differences in host plants, were statistically heterogeneous (P<0.05-<0.10). Relative fecundity and egg hatchability of sunflower reared insects were greater than those of hempweed reared ones, and these were also statistically heterogeneous (P<0.1 and <0.05, respectively). Hempweed leaves contained relatively high titres of phenols and low ratios of proteins to phenols. Ovaries were heavier in insects reared on sunflower than on hempweed, whereas the level of phenols incorporated into the ovary was higher in insects fed on hempweed than those on sunflower. The differences in these parameters may be due to variations in nutritional quality of these hosts and incorporation of ingested phenolic materials to ovary and insect biomass.
Résumé L'étude a porté sur l'évaluation de l'influence des feuilles de tournesol (Helianthus annuus) et de Mikana cordata sur le développement, la fécondité et l'éclosion des oeufs de D. casignetum Kollaz. La durée de développement et le gain de poids sur tournesol étaient plus importants que sur M. cordata. La durée de développement était statistiquement hétérogène (P<0.05), ce qui peut être dû à des différences entre plantes. La fécondité et le taux d'éclosion chez les insectes élevés sur tournesol étaient plus élevés que ceux observés sur M. cordata, dont les résultats étaient aussi hétérogènes (P<0.1 et<0.05 respectivement). Les feuilles de M. cordata contenaient des taux relativement élevés de phénols et des rapports protéines sur phénols bas. Tout ceci suggère que les différences observées sont attribuables à des variations dans la qualité nutritive de ces hôtes et dans l'incorporation à la biomasse de l'insecte de matériaux phénologiques ingérés.

Spatial processes are increasingly associated with species distributions in freshwaters. However, these processes are usually neglected in bioassessment techniques, which may introduce uncontrolled variation in ecological indicators used to express human disturbance. We used partial linear regression to quantify the relative importance of natural variables, human disturbance and spatial variables in structuring variation in boreal lake status indicators based on six biological indicator groups (phytoplankton, macrophytes, diatoms, littoral and profundal macroinvertebrates and fish). We found that, of the pure fractions, human disturbance explained most variation (7–32%) of the ecological quality ratios (EQRs) for all groups, with the exception of littoral macroinvertebrate metric, which was most controlled by natural and spatial variables (15% and 16%, respectively). In addition, pure fractions of natural and spatial variables and joint fractions of different explanatory variable groups structured all biological metrics to various degrees. Phytoplankton, diatom and profundal macroinvertebrate EQRs responded purest to human disturbance but only weakly to pure natural or spatial variation. Our work demonstrates that spatial processes and spatial structuring of the environment can bias bioassessment techniques and hinder the detection of human impact. Thus, it is important to acknowledge spatial autocorrelation, context of metacommunity dynamics, species dispersal traits and variable spatial extent when defining reference conditions and bioassessment techniques for different biological groups. More research is needed to better understand the relative role of spatial processes on ecological metrics originated from different freshwater ecosystems. To this end, our work provides an example of how sources of variation can be identified to increase accuracy in freshwater bioassessment.  相似文献

In the present study we describe the occurrence of fungi in 100 tap water and 16 groundwater samples from Slovenia. We used culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques. 28 fungal species belonging to 16 genera were isolated with selected culturing conditions, targeting human opportunistic yeasts and yeast-like fungi. Of special concern was the detection of Aureobasidium melanogenum, Exophiala dermatitidis, Rhinocladiella similis, Candida parapsilosis and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa. The DGGE analysis of ITS1 rDNA revealed from 6 to 16 bands hypothetically corresponding to different taxa, while pyrosequencing showed the presence of Aspergillus and Exophiala. According to the statistic machine learning methodology, the profile of fungi in water is determined by the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions and the presence of nitrate. Exophiala spp., C. parapsilosis and R. mucilaginosa are known as dominant contaminants of household appliances. It appears that they are transferred with water to dishwashers and washing machines, where they subsequently proliferate.  相似文献

Confortini The use of digital images to evaluate the interobserver agreement on cervical smear readings in Italian cervical cancer screening Objective: The aim of this study was to measure interobserver agreement among cytologists on using a set of digital images. Methods: A set of 90 selected Papanicolaou‐stained cervical smears were digitalized and the digital images circulated among 117 readers, from laboratories spread across almost all Italian regions. Three representative fields of each smear were displayed at 20× and 40× magnification (overall six images for each case). The diagnoses made by the cytologists who provided the images were taken as target diagnoses. Results: The κ values were: very low for the categories atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC‐US), and atypical squamous cells – cannot exclude high‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (ASC‐H); poor for the categories atypical glandular cells (AGC), high‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and invasive cancer; and fair to good for the categories negative and low‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL). However, we found a cluster of 42 best concordant readers. The overall κ value and overall weighted κ with the target diagnosis for these 42 readers were 0.45 and 0.66, respectively. This finding is in contrast with the overall κ value and overall weighted κ for the other readers of 0.39 and 0.59, respectively. Conclusions: As this finding is an estimate of the accuracy of the readers, we can infer that it will be very important to reach this level of concordance for all the participating readers. Future effort will facilitate common experiences in order to improve the reproducibility of diagnostic criteria. Digital images could be the key to reach this aim.  相似文献

Eutrophication is a major threat to freshwater ecosystems worldwide that affects aquatic biota and compromises ecosystem functioning. In this study, we assessed the potential use of leaf decomposition and associated decomposer communities to predict stream eutrophication. Because leaf quality is expected to affect leaf decomposition, we used five leaf species, differing in their initial nitrogen concentration. Leaves of alder, chestnut, plane, oak and eucalyptus were placed in coarse-mesh bags and immersed in six streams along an eutrophication gradient to assess leaf decomposition and the structure of associated decomposer communities. A hump-shaped relationship was established between leaf decomposition and the eutrophication gradient for all leaf species, except for eucalyptus. Invertebrate biomass and density as well as fungal biomass and sporulation were lowest at the extremes of the gradient. Leaf-associated invertebrate and fungal assemblages were mainly structured by stream eutrophication. The percentage of shredders on leaves decreased, whereas the percentage of oligochaeta increased along the eutrophication gradient. The Iberian Biological Monitoring Working Party Index (IBMWP) applied to benthic invertebrates increased from oligotrophic to moderately eutrophic streams and then dropped sharply at highly and hypertrophic streams. Overall, leaf decomposition was a valuable tool to assess changes in stream water quality, and it allowed the discrimination of sites classified by the IBMWP within class I and class IV. Moreover, decomposition of most leaf species responded in a similar way to eutrophication when decomposition was normalized by the quality of leaves.  相似文献

The salt-soluble proteins in barley grain selected for high-lysine content (Hiproly, CI 7115 and the mutants 29 and 86) and of a control (Carlsberg II) with normal lysine content, contain identical major proteins as determined by MW and electrophoretic mobility. The concentration of a protein group with a high lysine content varies significantly among the barleys examined. One protein, present in large amounts in Hiproly, is assumed to be partially responsible for the high-lysine character of Hiproly, CI 7115 and the mutants 29 and 86.  相似文献
